In the far south of Georgia, in the canyon of the Mtkvari river, lies one of the country’s most impressive sights: Vardzia. In the 12th century, under Queen Tamar, a monastery town with hundreds of caves, chapels, wine cellars and tunnels was carved into the steep rock face. In its heyday, it offered shelter to thousands of people.
On the way we stop at the Khertvisi fortress, one of the oldest in Georgia, and at the restored Rabati castle in Akhaltsikhe, where Georgian, Ottoman and Jewish history meet.
On the way back we visit Borjomi, a spa town in a green, wooded valley famous throughout the former Soviet Union for its mineral water. In the park you can taste the salty water straight from the spring – or relax in the warm sulphur pools above the town.
Good to know
As a day trip from Tbilisi the tour is long (about 12 hours); with an overnight stay in Borjomi or Akhaltsikhe it becomes much more relaxed. The caves involve some stairs and tunnels.
