No other day trip shows the Caucasus as impressively as the journey to Kazbegi. The road follows the legendary Georgian Military Road, which has connected Tbilisi with the north for centuries.

The first stop is Ananuri, a 17th-century fortress with two churches, reflected in the turquoise waters of the Zhinvali reservoir. Beyond the ski resort of Gudauri the road climbs to a panoramic viewpoint high above the Aragvi valley and crosses the Jvari Pass at 2,379 m.

In Stepantsminda we continue by off-road vehicle or on foot (about 1.5 hours uphill) to Gergeti Trinity Church. The small 14th-century church stands alone on a ridge at 2,170 m – with the glaciers of Mount Kazbek rising behind it on a clear day, one of the most famous views in Georgia.

Good to know

The trip is suitable for all ages. Bring warm clothes – even in summer it can be cool at the pass. In winter the road can be temporarily closed because of snow; we adapt the programme accordingly.
