Few treks in the Caucasus are as wild and rewarding as the traverse from Tusheti to Stepantsminda. The route leads through some of Georgia’s most remote highland regions, where shepherds still move their flocks between summer and winter pastures and ancient defensive towers watch over the valleys.
The adventure starts in Tusheti – reachable only over a spectacular mountain road and cut off from the rest of the country for much of the year. From the village of Girevi the trail climbs towards the high passes of the Greater Caucasus and descends into Khevsureti, known for its fortified stone villages and unique traditions.
The final stage leads into the Kazbegi region. In Stepantsminda, the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church stands in front of the glaciated summit of Mount Kazbek – a perfect end to an unforgettable journey on foot.
