Tbilisi is a city of contrasts: Persian-style sulphur baths next to Orthodox churches, crumbling houses with carved wooden balconies next to modern glass architecture. The best way to discover it is on foot – with someone who knows its stories.

We start in Abanotubani, the bath district with its brick domes, where hot sulphur springs gave the city its name (“tbili” means warm). A narrow gorge leads to the surprising Leghvtakhevi waterfall right in the old town. From there we climb – or take the cable car – to Narikala fortress, whose origins go back to the 4th century, with a panoramic view over the whole city.

Through narrow lanes we continue to the Anchiskhati Basilica, the oldest surviving church in Tbilisi, past the famous clock tower of the puppet theatre and across the Bridge of Peace to Rike Park.

Good to know

The tour can be done at any time of year and combined with a Georgian cooking class, a visit to a sulphur bath or the Dry Bridge flea market. Comfortable shoes are recommended – the old town is hilly.
