Only 20 kilometres from Tbilisi lies Mtskheta, the ancient capital of the kingdom of Kartli and the place where Christianity became the state religion in the 4th century. Its churches belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historical Monuments of Mtskheta”.

We begin at Jvari Monastery, built in the 6th century on a rocky hill. From here you look down on the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers and the town of Mtskheta – one of the most beautiful views in the country.

In the town we visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the most important church in Georgia, built in the 11th century on the site where, according to legend, the robe of Christ is buried. A walk through the old streets with small craft shops and a visit to the Samtavro Monastery complete the tour.
