Georgia is considered the cradle of wine: grapes have been fermented here for around 8,000 years. The traditional method in clay vessels buried in the ground – the qvevri – is recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. There is no better place to experience it than Kakheti, the country’s most important wine region.
We visit a family winery, look into the marani (wine cellar) and taste white amber wines and deep red Saperavi – accompanied by fresh bread from the tone oven, cheese and churchkhela, the traditional walnut sweet.
In the afternoon we drive to Sighnaghi, a picturesque town on a hill surrounded by 18th-century fortress walls, and to the nearby Bodbe Monastery, where Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia, is buried. From both places you have a wide view over the Alazani valley to the snow-capped Caucasus.
Good to know
The programme can be adapted – for example with the Alaverdi Monastery, the Tsinandali estate or a cooking class. The grape harvest (rtveli) in September and October is a particularly beautiful time to visit.
