The Chaukhi massif is often called the “Georgian Dolomites” – and for good reason. Its jagged limestone towers rise steeply above green valleys and are among the most photogenic mountains in the Caucasus.

The hike starts in Juta, a small village in the Sno valley that sits at more than 2,000 metres. A well-trodden path leads gently uphill through alpine meadows, along a mountain stream and past shepherds’ huts to a wide basin at the foot of the Chaukhi rock walls. Here we take a long break with a view before returning on the same path.

For experienced hikers the route can be extended: over the Chaukhi Pass you reach the colourful Abudelauri lakes and continue to Roshka in Khevsureti – an unforgettable two- to three-day crossing.
