South-east of Tbilisi, the green landscape suddenly gives way to a dry, wide semi-desert. Here, in the 6th century, the monk David, one of the thirteen Assyrian Fathers, founded a monastery in the rock. Over the centuries a complex of more than a dozen monasteries with hundreds of cells, chapels and refectories grew around it.

We visit the still inhabited Lavra monastery and then hike up the ridge to the Udabno cave monastery. The cave chapels are decorated with frescoes from the 10th to 13th centuries – and from the top of the ridge you look far across the steppe.

On the way back we stop at the colourful rainbow hills in shades of red, ochre and violet, which glow especially beautifully in the evening light.

Good to know

The hike to Udabno takes about 1.5–2 hours with some steep and rocky sections. In summer it can be very hot – spring and autumn are the best seasons. Churches require covered shoulders and knees; women need a headscarf.
