Only about an hour’s drive southwest of Tbilisi lies Bolnisi – a small town with a remarkable history. In 1818, settlers from Swabia founded the colony of Katharinenfeld here. For more than a hundred years the settlement was known for its vineyards, its orderly streets and its craftsmanship.
Many of the old colonist houses with their typical wooden balconies have survived to this day and give the town centre a unique character. On a walk through the historic quarter you will learn about the life of the settlers, the renaming of the town and the deportation of its German inhabitants in 1941.
Just outside the town stands Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral, built at the end of the 5th century. It bears some of the oldest dated inscriptions in the Georgian script and is one of the most important early Christian monuments in the country.
